What is LED lighting?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. LEDs differ from traditional light sources, such as halogen and incandescent light bulbs, in that they:

  • Use a lot less energy
  • Are far more durable
  • Produce very little heat, which makes them last longer

LED light bulbs generate light by using these light-emitting diodes - hence the name - which are two conducting materials in contact with one another. When energy is supplied to the diode, the charged atoms in one of the materials become visible light. This energy is converted into light by the transfer of electrons into the other conductive material.

All LED light products emit light up to 85% more efficiently than incandescent light products do. LED lighting lacks delicate components like glass tubes or filaments and is therefore more robust and durable than conventional lighting types.

How long does an LED light last?

LED lights are extremely long-lasting. All LED products and bulbs have a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours, which means they can last up to 12 years without the need for replacement.

No maintenance is required for at least 10 years with LED lighting.

Top benefits of LED lighting you need to know

We’ve briefly mentioned some of the benefits of LED lighting already, but let us take a closer look at why this lighting type is increasingly popular. So much so, in fact, that the LED lighting market has a predicted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% from 2023 to 2030.

1. They’re energy efficient

When compared to conventional alternatives, LED light bulbs are significantly more energy efficient, with energy savings of 80–90% against incandescent or halogen lighting. For fluorescent light bulbs, they’re 50% more efficient. Compared to other lighting technologies, LED lighting generates more useful lumens and less wasted light.

An increased energy efficiency ultimately leads to significant financial savings, since you'll be using less energy, and will have less to spend on your energy bill - more important than ever before in the midst of the cost-of-living and fuel price crises.

Your energy consumption will drastically decrease when you switch to LED light bulbs, making them a wise investment for your house or place of business. Businesses with large buildings or long operating hours will, of course, stand to save the most once making the switch.

2. They boast a long lifespan

One of the main benefits of LEDs is that they are extremely durable and far more long-lasting than traditional lighting types. In comparison to the likes of incandescent bulbs, the lifespan of an LED light is unmatched.

A typical LED light has a 50,000-hour lifespan. Its lifespan could even reach 100,000 hours, depending on how you use it and how often you use it.

Accordingly, an LED light can last up to 12 years before needing to be replaced. Since LEDs last longer, you’ll have to spend less time and money on replacement and maintenance costs.

3. You get instant lighting

LEDs light up instantly, unlike many other lighting technologies that can take some time to warm up and achieve their maximum brightness and intensity. If you want a light that can turn on instantly without any time to reach its optimal brightness, look no further than LED lighting.

What’s more, there’s no flickering involved. Impressive for a long-lasting light source, right? This unmatched illumination makes LEDs the perfect choice for floodlights, in particular, as they can illuminate your drive or exterior space, allowing you to spot potential intruders without delay.

Thinking of boosting the security of your home? Check out our LED flood light range, which offers exceptional outdoor illumination - pick between 30W, 50W, and 100W.

4. They give less heat output

LEDs produce very little heat. Compared to other types of lighting and bulbs, LEDs can run at a temperature that is far lower since they convert energy into light instead of heat. Any heat that LEDs do produce is dispersed by a specialised heat sink, which is intended to take any heat and distribute it safely away from the diodes.

Since an LED lamp's beam doesn't emit infrared heat, it is more suited for lighting spaces and being fitted to objects that are sensitive to heat.

5. They are affordable

With LED lighting being extremely long-lasting and energy efficient, it’s also a very cost-effective lighting source. This is because not only do you save on operating costs, but you shouldn’t have to replace them very often.

You can reduce costs by using LED ceiling panels, for example, as they do not use as much energy, which means you’ll simultaneously have an effective lighting source but also a lot less to pay on your monthly energy bills.

6. Low voltage

LED light sources operate on a low voltage, meaning that any flood-prone homes or businesses don’t have to worry about possible electric shocks.

A low-voltage lighting system is much safer than one that generates 10x the amount of volts, meaning that if someone accidentally touches a wire or other electrical component after a flood clean-up, they are less likely to be fatally shocked.

This also means that they’re also useful in outdoor applications.

7. Dimming capabilities

The dimming capabilities of LED lights are much more efficient compared to other types of lighting - even when dimmed, their effectiveness isn’t compromised; instead, they operate more efficiently.

As a result, you’re actually using less energy, reducing energy costs and improving the longevity of the LED bulb. Other forms of lighting may not perform as efficiently, or may not even dim at all, making this one of the key benefits of LED lighting.

Managing your LED lighting: How you can save on…

  • Bills: Compared to traditional lighting types, LED lighting can help you save around 50%-70% on energy bills! As you can see, LED lighting is truly beneficial for those who want to reduce their energy consumption and save money in the long run.
  • Money: Over the lifetime of an LED bulb, UK households can expect to save around £2,000 to £3,000 as a result of switching to LED lighting; this isn’t only from energy savings but also from the fact that LED lights are often cheaper to purchase and run.
  • Waste: Unlike a halogen and incandescent bulb, the disposal of LED lights typically leads to less waste as they not only last longer, but they can also be recycled.
  • Hassle: There are many types of LED lights to choose from, so you’ll more than likely find a solution that works best for you, saving you time from having to fuss over the type of lighting to get.

Benefits of LED lighting for outside: Garden & exterior

If you don't know where to begin with the array of technologies available, it might be difficult to find ideal outdoor lighting for your needs. That’s where we can help.

LED lighting is the best type of lighting for several reasons, and it’s even great for outdoor lighting. Whether you need lighting for the exterior of your workplace or home, LED is undoubtedly the best option for you - and here is why.

Unstoppable in cold weather

Cold weather is not too friendly with traditional lighting types since they often require a higher voltage when temperatures start to lower.

In contrast, LED lighting works better in colder climates, which is why they are a great outdoor lighting choice.

Durability that makes for powerful outdoor lighting

LED lights last so long that they require no maintenance or bulb changes - even when fitted outdoors. Their durability is breathtaking, and you won’t have to worry about them running out any time in the future.

There is a range of wattage options available, and you must choose the right wattage for your outdoor area accordingly. Small areas only need a low wattage, whereas larger outdoor spaces require more as you’d expect.

The range and intensity of LED lights make them an incredible outdoor light source option.

Advantages of commercial LED lighting

Businesses require an effective lighting source that lasts long and wastes minimal energy during operating hours. Some workplaces and premises are open through the night and can have several floors that require lights, for example. This can be bad news for your energy bills.

The myriad of benefits of LED lighting has meant a rise in adoption in commercial buildings. Commercial LED lighting allows you to spend less and save a lot of energy while operating lighting systems for long hours.

In comparison to fluorescent and incandescent light sources, LED lighting products are far more efficient since they require at least 85% less energy to generate the same quantity of light.

Not only that, they can last up to 25 times longer, saving you money and meaning you don’t have to worry about frequent maintenance and replacements. In fact, for the typical LED, you won’t need to arrange any maintenance for the first 10 years.
